What is Sushi? Everything you need to know

Gunkan maki

Another form of maki, “rolled” or “wrapped” sushi, is Gunkan maki and was developed in the 1940s in a Ginza sushi restaurant. It is created by wrapping a large nori strip around a rice ball thus leaving enough room to be loaded with different ingredients at the end. The word, translated as sushi for “battleship” or “warship,” derives from its form, resembling a small ship. Uni sea urchin, squid, salmon roe, negitoro (a mix of fatty tuna belly and green onion), potato salad, and kanimiso (blended crab brains) are common toppings for gunkan maki. In all takeout sushi bento boxes and sushi restaurants, gunkan maki is widely used.
